Here, we present to you a list of questions and thought experiments that will act as your reference material after you have watched – SUPER DELUXE.
General Questions
- What is the significance of the title? Did you find any indication of the title while watching the movie?
- Why do you think these 3 completely random stories were chosen in the same movie? What were the connecting factors which intertwined these stories together?
- What do you think was the significance of the alien at the end of the movie? Also, at several times the camera is focused towards the ants walking on the wall. What did it signify?
The Story of Vembu and Mugil
- What kind of tone did the first scene establish?
(A lot of red, devilish)
- At several instances in the movie, Mugil suddenly starts a rant. Why do you think he does that?
- Mugil’s reaction to the situation when he finds out what has happened.
He picks up the utensil to throw it on Vembu but stops.
Later, he says, it’s not anger, it’s anguish. What do you think he means?
(his masculinity was questioned)
- Vembu says, “We have lived together for so long. Why haven’t we warmed up to the idea of us?”
Why do you think they couldn’t or didn’t?
- Symbolism of key hanging in the car
(dead guy was the key(answer) to their deadlock of a marriage)
- Why do you think they are able to have a light moment in a dreadful time like the one they were in?
- Why do you think he talks to the corpse?
- When Vembu tells that she isn’t a slut and doesn’t sleep with anyone and everyone, Mugil says, “I know but… he is a policeman”
What is your understanding of Mugil’s reaction to the entire situation?
The Story of the Gaaji Boys, Arputham and Leela
- Do you think Arputham was always blinded by his faith?
- What do you think Arputham realised when he met Shilpa?
- What message do you think the writers are trying to put across through Arputham’s story?
(sometimes we assign cosmic and metaphysical meaning to things that are merely just coincidences)
- Symbolism of black polythene bags
(it was a very effective and convenient tool to depict the new dimension that the film had entered into)
Shilpa and Rassakutti
- A kid is conditioned as per their surroundings. Then why do you think Rassakutti, unlike the other kids, was so pure and unaffected by his surroundings?
- While looking at Shilpa draping her saree, what do you think her wife was feeling?
- Do you think that the superstition that whatever trans people say becomes a prophecy is merely an excuse to justify that they are different?
- Do you believe Shilpa had grey shades in her character as well?
- What was the significance of the policeman’s name (Berlin)?
Possible issues
- Could they have done away with showing the alien literally and left it open ended?
(The reason why it felt absurd at that point was because it hadn’t set itself up for the absurdity to follow. Maybe a glimpse of a supernatural possibility at the beginning could have made it more consumable)
- Did you feel that the eventual message of the film felt a bit on the nose?
